About eva

Eva Yap is a STEM educator and an educational researcher and technologist. She believes that learning STEM is for everyone and has spent many years in the STEM outreach field, advocating for accessible and equitable STEM education for youths. Eva currently oversees the operations, curriculum development, and assessment of computer science and engineering based youth programs at Simon Fraser University’s Faculty of Applied Sciences. She also facilitates workshops for educators on how to teach STEM topics using fun, hands-on activities that relate to real-world problems.

Eva has a master’s degree in Experimental Medicine from the University of British Columbia in which she worked on a computational biology project and learned how to code for the first time. While at graduate school, she also volunteered extensively for various STEM outreach organizations such as Let's Talk Science, Kids Code Jeunesse, and Geneskool at Genome BC. This made her realize what she loves more than finding subtle trends in large-scale biological data, is creating learning experiences for youths to develop an appreciation for STEM disciplines.

With her newfound passion, Eva completed a second master’s degree in Educational Technology and Learning Design from Simon Fraser University and is currently a PhD student in the same program. Her research interests revolve around tool-mediated social interactions and design practices to foster computational literacy in K-12 and post-secondary learning environments. She is also the course developer and instructor of the Low-code App Development Microcredential at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. In her spare time, Eva enjoys running, hiking, and playing board games.
